Our courses are delivered by professional coaches and trainers of the highest standards. It is also recommended that those attending RYA Instructor courses become RYA members. All RYA Instructor qualifications require a valid First Aid certificate.

The Assistant Instructor (AI) is trained to assist qualified Instructors in teaching beginners up to the standard of the National Sailing Scheme Level 2 and the Youth Sailing Scheme Stage 3.The award is specific to the centre where the training is delivered. The course covers the role of an AI at DWSC, teaching methods and centre's standard operating procedures. Training will be based around the Club's fleet of training boats.

Successful candidates will be awarded the Assistant Instructor certificate.

This is an assessment day - the assessment will determine whether you have the required sailing ability to become an instructor. There is little time on the day for training input - you should have recent sailing experience and fully understand what will be required of you on the day. Candidates will be able to progress onto the RYA Dinghy Instructor course, within a year of successful completion.

Our very popular 5-day Dinghy Instructor course teaches you the RYA method, the structure of the RYA and how to teach sailing. The course is run by an RYA Coach Assessor and is moderated on the last day by a second RYA Coach Assessor. In addition to successful completion of this course, to qualify as an Instructor, you MUST also hold the following qualifications:

  • A recognised First Aid certificate

  • RYA Powerboat Level 2

  • RYA Pre-entry Assessment
